The Kandt House Museum is located in the city of Kigali in what is known as the Nyarungenge District. The Kandt House Museum was formally known as the Natural History Museum . Nyarugenge was chosen as the colonial capital of Rwanda in 1907 by a German Resident known as Richard Kandt , who was the first colonial Governor of Rwanda. However the name was changed to Kigali in 1908 because the name Nyarugenge was too difficult for the colonialists to pronounce.
The Kandt House Museum Comprises of 3 Main Sections namely: The first Part is the Rwandan Life before the Colonial period, The Second part trances the life of the Rwandard people during the Colonial period under the Germans and Belgians and the the Third Part that traces the roots of Kigali before, during and after the Colonial rule.
The Kandt House Museum is open daily from 8am to 6pm, its closed on 7th April and closed from 11am to to 6pm on Umuganda days( Last saturday of the month)
